Engines: Nissan Intelligent Power

  • V6 Petrol:

Pathfinder's already-impressive credentials step up with this updated 2017 version. Its improved 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine (model code VQ35) now delivers more power and torque with more than 50 percent of its componentry either new or new-to-Pathfinder, including a revised combustion chamber design, new pistons, new intake manifold and e-VTC (electronic Variable Timing Control). The compression ratio has also been raised to 11.0:1 (from the previous 10.3:1).

The V6 engine's new Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG) system provides better wide-open throttle performance and improved fuel economy and emissions performance (compared to a non-direct-injection system). The switch to a mirror-bore cylinder coating reduces engine weight by just over one kilogram and reduces friction between the piston ring and the cylinder wall. The technology eliminates the need for a heavy cast iron cylinder liner.

The V6 engine's performance and economy figures are summarised in the table below.

Petrol V6 Engine VQ35 (MY16 - current)  VQ35DD (MY17 - new)
 POWER (kW) 190 202
 TORQUE (Nm) 325 340
 Fuel economy (L/100km) **2WD / 4WD 10.0 / 10.3 9.9 / 10.1
 Max. towing weight (V6 2WD & 4WD) 2,700kg 2,700kg
  • I4 Petrol Supercharged Hybrid

Nissan's efficient and responsive QR25DE supercharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid petrol engine will carry over into the 2017 Pathfinder. Supplementing the 2.5-litre IC engine's performance is an efficient 15kW electric motor fed by a 144-volt Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery. Delivering combined performance figures of up to 188kW of power and 330Nm of torque it returns an impressive rate of fuel consumption of 8.6-litres per 100km travelled (combined cycle**).

The petrol-electric hybrid four-cylinder engine's performance and economy figures are summarised in the table below.

 Petrol I4 engine (supercharged)  QR25 (MY17 - unchanged)
 POWER (kW, combined)   188
 TORQUE (Nm, combined)  330
 Fuel economy (L/100km) **2WD / 4WD  8.6 / 8.7
 Max. towing weight (I4h 2WD & 4WD)  1,650kg

The Pathfinder's fuel tank capacity remains unchanged at 73 litres and the recommended fuel for both engines is 91RON unleaded.

Transmission

All 2017 Pathfinder models are equipped with Nissan's third-generation Xtronic transmission. The Xtronic transmission includes D-Step Logic Control, which simulates shifts in a stepped gearbox, giving a more natural feeling when driving. The new Pathfinder's powertrain delivers the real-world driving benefits of more responsive acceleration and re-acceleration, such as when entering highways or passing.

All three model grades (ST, ST-L and Ti) with the V6 engine are available in either two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. Nissan's ALL MODE 4x4-i System, controlled by a rotary dial, can be switched between three modes, 2WD (drive directed to front wheels, for better economy), AUTO (system monitors all four wheels to distribute the ideal amount of torque between them) and LOCK (for rough terrain, permanently engaging drive power with a 50:50 torque split between front and rear wheels at speeds below 40km/h).

The Pathfinder hybrid ST is available only in two-wheel drive and the ST-L and Ti grades of Pathfinder hybrid are four-wheel drive.

Suspension and steering

The Pathfinder's suspension gives a smooth and secure ride both on- and off-road. It features independent strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. Steering is a speed-sensitive electric power steering system.

For 2017, slightly stiffer suspension (11 percent front and seven percent rear) and quicker steering response have improved body control for a more confident ride and controlled handling.

Wheels and tyres

Wheels with a new high-contrast design have been fitted to the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder. They are detailed below.

  • ST and ST-L: 18-inch wheels with 235/65 R18 tyres
  • Ti: 20-inch wheels with 235/55 R20 tyres

Safety technologies: Nissan Intelligent Driving

The 2017 Pathfinder is packed with advanced safety and driver assistance technology. The ST-L (mid) and Ti (top) model grades now include:

  • Intelligent Emergency Braking (IEB) – Can, in an emergency situation, apply the vehicle's brakes to help the driver avoid or reduce the impact of a possible collision
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW) – Uses radar technology to deliver audible and visualwarnings to the driver to reduce the vehicle's speed to avoid a possible collision
  • Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) - Maintains a selected distance from the car ahead when activated
  • Moving Object Detection (MOD) - Can detect movement behind the vehicle whenreversing and in front of the vehicle when driving slowly; has been added to the availableIntelligent Around View® Monitor (AVM), which gives the driver a 360-degree aerial view when reversing.
  • Blind Spot Warning (BSW) – Warns the driver of a vehicle travelling in their blind spot
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) – Warns the driver about passing vehicles behind thePathfinder when reversing

Six airbags are fitted as standard equipment to all model grades as is a reversing camera and rear parking sensors.
