Melbourne, Australia – Currently the world's best-selling SUV*, the Nissan X-TRAIL has just chalked up 200,000 Australian sales.

Initially unveiled at the 2000 Paris Motor Show, the X-TRAIL arrived in Australia in late 2001 and was an immediate success.

The first generation, on sale between 2001 and 2008 enjoyed 71,193 Australian retails, the second generation was as popular with 70,715 sales, while the current generation, which arrived in 2014, has sold 59,507 to the end of September.

Still a firm favourite in the competitive medium SUV segment, the 200,000th X-TRAIL was sold to a Melbourne-based family with a toddler and a soon to arrive second child.

"We have a two year old and we are expecting our second this week, so we needed to upgrade to a larger and safer car," said Alison.

"A girlfriend of mind who is in the same situation - with a two year old and a newborn - bought a Nissan X-TRAIL and really raved about the car, the purchase and the entire experience.

"I had my eye on other cars, but I did my research and test drove the X-TRAIL. And we were very impressed.

"We were looking for something safe and reliable, plus something that would fit two kids, the double pram and shopping. I'm not a car person but I'm loving driving it."

A vehicle designed with families in mind, buyers are attracted to the Nissan X-TRAIL's modern styling, premium interior, technology and safety equipment.

"The X-TRAIL offered us all the safety that we were looking for, it has a five star ANCAP safety rating which is really important for us," said Alison.

"Living in the inner city, the all-round camera appealed to me. Whether it's parking or getting around tight spots, it's just an easy car to drive. And adds to my confidence."

The X-TRAIL has a long list of Nissan Intelligent Mobility safety features including Intelligent Emergency Braking (IEB) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW), which are standard on all models, plus Intelligent Around-ViewTM Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Adaptive Front Lighting System and Intelligent Lane Intervention on select grades.

The Nissan X-TRAIL is powered by either a 2.0L or 2.5L petrol engine, a more powerful 2.0L turbo-diesel engine goes on sale next month, and are mated to a 6-speed manual or Xtronic CVT transmission.

Available in FWD and AWD, fuel economy figures for petrol models start at 7.9 litres per hundred kilometres# and 6.0 litres per hundred kilometres# for diesel variants.

Refreshed in May, the X-TRAIL is available in seven contemporary colours including the recently released Marine Blue, Copper Blaze and Ruby Red.
